[ALL ABOUT THE WEB] Livetext in ReggieNet: Get a Clue (State Farm Hall of Business 131)

(30 minute session, 9:00-9:30 a.m.)
Professor Plum and his cohorts in Teacher Education wanted to use the best features of two assessment platforms – Livetext and ReggieNet – so asked students to walk across the great divide, submitting some assignments in one location and portfolios or other work in another. Grades were separated, feedback was divided by platform making it harder to find, and comprehensive data reporting was inconvenient.

Thanks to a connection made at CITx last November, this session will introduce you to the mysterious Livetext (the lesser known entity serving about 2000 students each semester) and share the recent breakthrough that allows Miss Scarlet to travel quickly and efficiently from the ReggieNet Lounge to the Livetext Conservatory. The news of this secret tunnel creation was met with great jubilation by Professor Plum so the process moved to pilot project phase this summer, with lessons learned for expansion. Expansion of services, that is, offering students, faculty, and staff integrated access to Zoom, textbook manufacturers, OneNote, and more.

  • Barb Jacobsen
Barb Jacobsen has seven years of experience supporting the implementation and development of Livetext – the web-based assessment platform for Teacher Education. In addition to orienting and training new faculty and students, she manages the internal architecture of courses, rosters, and assignments for twenty-eight academic programs across all five colleges. Jacobsen guided the conversion from manual to automatic roster upload (collaborating with PeopleSoft, ESB, and UNIX pros on campus) and focuses on improving user experience while maximizing value. She tailors the platform’s offerings to each Program with ePortfolios/templates/rubrics; implements the ever-evolving collection of data for teacher licensure (edTPA); enables campus-wide data gathering/reporting for CAEP accreditation (edDispositions); and is now integrating efforts with ReggieNet.

  • Ben Rappleyea
Benjamin is the Lead Administrator for the Office of Identity and Access Management in Administrative Technologies. Prior to this role, however, he was an administrator for the learning management system at Illinois State University (ReggieNet). Benjamin is an advocate for student and instructor experience based improvement to ReggieNet allowing instructors to more fully utilize the potential of ReggieNet while enhancing the students experience.

We will go in-depth into using Dell Command Enterprise Suite for managing Dell drivers and firmware as well as Lenovo's Update Retriever and ThinInstaller programs for managing Lenovo drivers and firmware; integrating these utilities into an SCCM task sequence that can be deployed to computer currently used in production as well as during a bare metal build process.

Keynote Address: Fighting for the Humanity in our Technological World

Each day, any of us who work in the field of tech are bombarded with opportunity after opportunity to reduce our interactions with our coworkers & clients into an impersonal; to do list, fired off email response, or call to action in our software platforms. There is a time and a place for these types of responses and actions, but we also must acknowledge there is a time and a place to stand up and fight for the humanity of others and even ourselves! As we start off this next school year, let’s dive in and continue to grow in our ability to move this campus forward technologically, as well as relationally!

  • Robbie Osenga
I am a husband & father who works professionally as a Speaker, Coach & Leader of People. After an early career in design, and then founding a school in 2008, I began accepting opportunities to speak, coach & consult with other schools, non-profit organizations & businesses all centered around my core mission of Empowering Others to Live a Life Worthy of their Calling.

I now serve as the Vice President & Chief Potential Officer of Cybernautic, a web design & digital strategy firm, while still maintaining my various collaborative & consultative efforts in various projects at large. I am an "elder statesman" of the Millennial Generation, and work passionately as an advocate to bridge the gap, as the Millennial Generation transitions into our workforce & culture. I'm told that my passion, sense of humor & compelling message makes a positive dent in people's lives, and I'm always looking for ways to do more of just that!

I realized my ability & desire to speak, teach & motivate as a 7th grade student, leading the efforts of my Junior High school to better engage & transition incoming 6th grade students. Over the past 20 years this desire & ability has put me in a variety of settings & demographics, but all of it centered around the need in the world that I feel I was created to meet, which is POTENTIAL. Whether this is a room full of students, educators, professionals or congregants, I consistently work to bring an enlightening message & a unique perspective that is intended to affect change in people's lives!

  • Build consensus among stakeholders?
  • Gain support for initiatives?
  • Strengthen your teams?
  • Justify budget increases?

It is only then that I have the opportunity and privilege to inform, persuade, or enlighten them.” Recognizing the value of strategic communications within the department and across the organization, SIU’s Office of Information Technology is formalizing Hubbs’ role of Client Services and Communications—a title which is fairly new, but growing in forward-thinking technology organizations.

[TECH TRACK] Privacy. A retro idea making a comeback (State Farm Hall of Business 132)

In recent years we have witnessed the metaphorical tectonic shift of the regulatory landscape. As of May of this year, all industries are beholden to legislation with global reach, and requirements to protect users’ data - their privacy. This is just the beginning. Already we are seeing U.S. states follow suit to implement stringent data privacy legislation, and it is only a matter of years before we see similar Federal legislation. It's time we stop asking "can we" and instead ask "should we". Please join us in open discussion as we dive into what this change means for us as individuals and as a business.

Before that, he spent more than 15 working as a broadcast journalist and, later, as a journalism teacher at Southern Illinois University.
