CIT Conference 2014

The second annual CIT Conference was held May 28, 2014 at the State Farm Hall of Business. The keynote speaker for the event was Keith W. McIntosh, also known as Mac. He is the Vice Chancellor for Information Technology (IT) at Pima County Community College District, and serves as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the College, providing highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Chancellor. Mac spoke about the need to continuously improve, both organizationally and personally—emphasizing the need for professional development, and challenged conference attendees to embrace a culture of continuous improvement.

In addition, there were 16 track sessions, including four presentations by vendors such as Apple and Microsoft. Attendees also had multiple opportunities to network with colleagues from other University departments over a complimentary lunch, as well as during "Networking and Refreshments" sessions during the morning and afternoon.

Managing Small Projects

Let's look at some ways to help ourselves manage small projects better. We’re not talking about the big "enterprise" efforts here, we’re talking about the small projects that we all do and involve a few people and about a hundred hours of effort. Tips and tricks and templates and touch-points will help, but what else can we do? We'll talk about managing your "project portfolio" as well.

  • Dean Plumadore, Project Manager
    Dean Plumadore has been an ISU staff member since July 1987. He's been on the ground floor of many technology changes at ISU during that time. He believes in life-long learning, sharing of knowledge, and changing the world with technology. His "need to know" manifested in a Masters in Applied Computer Science, a Masters in Project Management (underway), and a PMP certification in Project Management. He also shares this accumulated knowledge with anyone who asks and has been teaching courses at ISU since 1996. Currently he is teaching an Intro to Hardware/Software class to Information Technology majors.

Mind the Gap: Aligning Perception With Reality Using the Right Data

Data-driven decision making is a popular trend, but clients and consumers may not always get to see the benefits of this approach. This session will present specific scenarios in which Web and Interactive Communications (WEB) uses analytics to help drive desired outcomes. We will provide some easy-to-follow examples on the use of Google Analytics, Google Search results, usability studies, and agile project management metrics to prioritize work and ensure success.

  • Arturo Ramirez
    Arturo Ramirez is the director of Web and Interactive Communications at Illinois State University. He has been involved in web development efforts for higher education for over 12 years. His focus has been to lead and manage diverse projects such as the University web portal, learning management system, data/system migrations, and business intelligence projects. He has experience serving as a University instructor for the School of IT, holds an M.S. in Applied Computer Science, and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP).

Continuously Improve or what?

Keith will share his thoughts on why we need to continuously improve. He will share how it could be done at the organizational and personal level. A strong focus will be on the personal level and the need for professional development. His talk will call on his 30 years of experience leading and managing within higher education and within the military, with a goal of inspiring CIT attendees to embrace a culture of continuous improvement.

  • Keith W. McIntosh, Vice Chancellor for Information Technology and CIO at Pima Community College
    Keith W. McIntosh, also known as Mac, is the Vice Chancellor for Information Technology (IT) at Pima County Community College District, the eighth largest in the country. As Vice Chancellor, Mac serves as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the College and provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Chancellor. He leads 84 staff and manages multiple offices supporting 380 Faculty, 950 Staff, and 69,000 Students (annually). He manages a $5M capital budget and $10M operating budget. He is responsible for over $25M in technology infrastructure.

    Prior to his role as CIO, Keith served as the Assistant Vice Chancellor (AVC) for IT in an acting role for 14 months at Pima, where he had primary responsibility for the IT departments, services and operations most directly impacting the College's enterprise computing (instructional and administrative programs). Previously, Keith was the Director of Technical Services for IT at Pima starting in February 2008. Mac retired from the United States Air Force where he held various progressive leadership and management positions within IT during his distinguished and decorated 24.5 years of service which included two tours in Korea and a deployment to Iraq.

    Mac is the Chair of the Advisory Board Center for Higher Education Chief Information Officer Studies, Inc. (CHECS), (2013-2016). He serves on the board for the Consortium for the Establishment of Information Technology Performance Standards (CEITPS) and on the Product Futures Advisory Committee for Desire2Learn’s Learning Management System. He also serves as faculty for the EDUCAUSE Institute Management Program. Additionally, he is very active in the higher education information technology community where he has served and continues to serve on various national committees and advisory groups. He is currently serving on the Tucson Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, Military Affairs Committee. He also serves on Board of Directors for the Southern Arizona Chapter of the American Red Cross.

    Mac has a Master of Business Administration degree (Summa Cum Laude) with a concentration in Information Technology Management from Trident University International (TUI) (formerly Touro University International) in Cypress, CA and received his undergraduate degree in Management Information Systems from Bellevue University in Bellevue, NE. Mac is well known as a writer and a speaker. He was the inaugural recipient of the EDUCAUSE Rising Star Award in 2011, a Jane N. Ryland Fellowship recipient from EDUCAUSE in 2012, and a Leading Change Institute (formerly Frye Leadership Institute) Fellow from EDUCAUSE in 2012.

    Mac is married to his wife Penny for 21 years in July. They have three adult children.

Social Media Listening & Monitoring @Illinois State University

Representatives from the School of Communication will provide an overview of the tools they use to study topics and trends emerging across social media outlets. They will showcase the NUVI social analytics platform, share exciting case studies, demonstrate the usefulness of social media listening and monitoring in higher education, and discuss the possible partnerships that can be made across departments and units at Illinois State University through a future social analytics and listening center in the School of Communication.

Implementing ITIL — Administrative Technologies Takes a Practical Approach

In preparation for the ITSM and LEAPForward, Administrative Technologies kicked off an ITIL implementation project in October 2013. A dedicated team was charged with the implementation of various ITIL processes. Come and listen to a discussion of the steps that this team took in trying to make ITIL a part of the AT culture.

iPads for Instructors

Many faculty have inquired about being able to use their iPads wirelessly in classrooms to present information. Unfortunately, challenges with Apple hardware and networking continue make that difficult. There are, however, some good iPad apps that allow an instructor to wirelessly control the room computer, annotate and record over presentations. This session will focus on Doceri, an easy-to-use application that gives faculty some wireless options for presenting.

  • Doug Smith, Director of Learning Spaces and Audio/Visual Technologies
    Smith has been the Director of Learning Spaces and Audio/Visual Technologies (formerly Classroom Tech Support) since June of 2002. Prior to that has held technology support positions in the public school sector and taught at all levels including Indiana University. He holds a Bachelors of Music Education from ISU, a Masters of Music Education from Indiana University and a Ph.D in Educational Technology from Purdue University.

Office 365 is an ever green service with new updates being added on a monthly basis, in this session we will cover new features and announcements in Office 365 over the past 3-4 months in realms of security, admin controls, device support and mobile apps.

    Ashanka Iddya is based out of Chicago and has been at Microsoft for 3 years and as an Office 365 Specialist for 2 years. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA from Duke University.

State of the Web II: This Time… It’s Mobile

Web and Interactive Communications (WEB) reflects on a year of improved Web development and mobile adaptivity at Illinois State University. Topics include an ongoing analysis of our overall Web presence, improvements on responsive design, current analytics trends, and a look to what the future may hold (hint: quite a bit more mobile).

  • Ryan Christie, Web Operations Manager at Web & Interactive Communications
    Starting off as an Application Developer, Ryan Christie’s main focus was on front-end development and managing many of the university-wide applications such as the CMS, the events calendar, and the Google Search Appliance. Transitioning into his role of Web Operations Manager, Christie focuses his time trying to make the office function more efficiently by combining his business education with his developer background.

    Alex Skorpinski has been working on the Web in Higher Education since 2004. Having lived through a number of reorganizations and system implementations, his day-to-day is strategizing how to best leverage the content Illinois State has to offer over their 400 sites.

    Jacob DeGeal has been a graphic designer with Illinois State University's web office for 7 years. Over the years he has witnessed the web evolve from Flash-based movies to liquid layouts, fixed one-page designs to responsive architecture. His chief cause is to organize and unite all Illinois State websites under a single brand standard, as well as develop effective, innovative and creative solutions for University departments and initiatives.

Campus Solutions — Get to Know the New Student Information System

Come see a demonstration of Campus Solutions, the new student information system for Illinois State University. Campus Solutions is designed to provide a common, shared source of student information for all staff members and departments. This one hour demonstration will be presented by the Administrative Technologies Service Communication & Training team and will give you a broad overview of Campus Solutions structure, terminology, and user interface. The training team will also sketch out plans for future training and point you to additional resources that will help you learn about Campus Solutions on your own.

    Jordan Jeffers worked as a technical writer for Web & Interactive Communications until earning his M.S. from Illinois State University in December 2012. He began work as a Training Specialist for LEAPForward and Administrative Technologies in February 2014.

    Lisa Lindenfelser worked as a technical writing assistant for Administrative Technologies in December 2012. She now works as a Training Specialist for Administrative Technologies as part of the LEAPForward initiative while also finishing her Master's Degree in Technical Writing.

Get to Know the New Student Information System Presentation

Oracle’s RightNow for Customer Relationship Management

During this session, we will be demonstrating how ISU will be implementing RightNow to facilitate recruiting and to assist with enrollment. A brief demonstration of RightNow’s Incident Management and Communication Campaign systems will also be given to illustrate how RightNow might be used to facilitate other communication management needs for the University.

We will be discussing and walking through the solutions employed by College of Fine Arts for managing its Mac environment, including DeployStudio for imaging, Apple Remote Desktop for remote administration and package deployment, and Profile Manager for OS X and iOS Device Management as well as iOS App Licensing Management.

    Paul Unsbee is a member of the CFA-IT team providing desktop support and server administration for the faculty and staff of the College of Fine Arts. He is equally at home with both Windows and OS X and has specialized in both over the course of his career. His philosophy towards IT support is that it should be tailored to the individual and department.

An Overview of ReggieNet Basics and the Recent Upgrade

A brief overview of ReggieNet basics will be presented, including the course creation process and timing; common issues regarding enrollment; and frequently encountered problems. We will review the recent upgrade — what’s new, and what has changed. An early look at the proposed update to the main interface/skin (NeoPortal) will also be presented. Finally, time will be available for participants to share issues and questions that have come up in their course of operations.

  • Charles Bristow, Instructional Developer
    Charles has been with ISU since 1998, after holding staff positions at the University of Minnesota and Rutgers University. His career has evolved from biology (M.S. in Ecology from Rutgers University) to computer support, giving him a broad perspective on the needs of faculty and staff. He has been working at the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology since its inception in 2005; he has been providing LMS support since 2006, and is one the ReggieNet support contacts for faculty.

    Ron has been in the Information Technology field for over 14 years and has worked now for Illinois State University on the Enterprise Application team under Administrative Technologies for over 5 years. Ron currently is the ReggieNet administrator for the university where he provides both front end and back end 3rd level technical support for the Sakai CLE Tool, Respondus Lockdown Browser and the various LTI Integration pieces. Ron also oversees the Student Information feed going into ReggieNet System and has extensive knowledge of day to day operations and how to better support the product.

    Rachel has a background in commercial digital signage and has been our Coordinator since 2010. She serves as a central point of contact for all signage coordinators within ISU and our vendor, FourWinds.

  • Mike Regilio, CAS Digital Signage Coordinator
    Mike has been a resource for the College of Arts & Sciences digital signs before ISU had a central solution. In working closely with Learning Spaces and others with signage needs, he has helped deploy dozens of signs.
